Distinguishing from other ketone products
- Ketone salts (BHB-Na, BHB-K, BHB-Ca): lower potency, salt burden, worse GI tolerance.
- MCT oil (medium-chain triglycerides): raises BHB modestly to ~0.5–1 mmol/L.
- Ketone monoester: highest and most predictable BHB rise.
Applications under study
- Ultra-endurance sport (mixed results).
- HFpEF and other cardiac indications (small trials showing acute stroke-volume improvement).
- Cognitive support in early Alzheimer's (proof-of-concept only).
- Post-operative recovery in cardiothoracic surgery.
Practical
Taste is unpleasant; consumers dilute in bitter drinks. Cost per dose is high but falling as more manufacturers enter the market.
