Vaccines with older-adult-specific trial evidence
- High-dose influenza vaccine: quadruple antigen dose vs standard. Reduces influenza hospitalisation and mortality vs standard-dose in adults ≥65.
- Adjuvanted influenza vaccine (Fluad): MF59 adjuvant improves immunogenicity in older adults.
- Recombinant zoster vaccine (Shingrix): 90%+ efficacy against shingles even in adults > 70; substantially better than the older Zostavax.
- RSV vaccines (Arexvy, Abrysvo): newly-approved for adults ≥60, reducing RSV-lower-respiratory-tract disease.
- COVID-19: updated formulations and boosters are highest-yield in older adults.
- Pneumococcal: PCV15/PCV20 plus PPSV23 sequence protects against invasive pneumococcal disease.
Why they matter for longevity
Infection remains a major cause of morbidity, functional decline, and mortality in older adults. Vaccines are among the highest-return medical interventions per intervention-dollar in geriatric practice.
